There is a lot to be said about the standards and protocols of content moderation on the various social media platforms. Meta/Facebook was recently in the limelight owing to the misconduct of its third-party content moderation contractor, Sama in Kenya. Which further revealed Facebook’s poor investment in content moderation in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The recent findings of a study by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue point to an even bigger gaffe in Facebook’s content moderation with regards to extremist content in East Africa and Kenya in particular allowing Al-Shabab and Islamic State networks to flourish largely unchecked.
